An annual event on the Plymouth Ramblers walks programme is to support the fund raising walks arranged by the Plymouth and Tavistock teams of Dartmoor Rescue. Invariably John Skinner has put a team together and led the Plymouth Ramblers participants in all sorts of weather.
On 21 September John led a team of 14, including Tony, Karen, Sue, Stephanie, Janet, Helen, Leena, Julie, KIrsty, Lisa, Mike, Margaret and Bharet . We started from Princetown in typical Princetown fog and with a threat of thunder and heavy showers through the day. Our route took us to Hart Tor and Black Tor, by which time the fog had cleared, alongside the River Meavy to Norsworthy Bridge then via Deancombe to the Scout Hut, Ditsworthy Warren House, Giants Basin and a steady climb to Higher Hartor Tor. We continued to Eylesbarrow and the long direct track passing Nuns Cross and South Hessary Tor back to Princetown. A distance of about 12 miles in a little over 6 hours. The threatened thunder did not arrive and most of the walk was in fine sunny but breezy conditions.Tea and coffee was enjoyed afterwards in the Fox Tor Cafe.
A cheque for £300 representing entry fees and donations was handed to the Rescue group as well as personal sponsorship money from some team members. A deserving charitable cause that needs and deserves our support.
I know of one member of Plymouth Ramblers who had to call on the Rescue Group services in the last year. Next time it could be your turn..
