Plymouth Ramblers

Our group depends on all the members who volunteer to lead walks, braving weather and terrain to bring us safely through the beautiful and dramatic scenery that we're lucky to enjoy around Plymouth. Could you contribute by leading a walk?

You don't have to take on a pioneering wilderness yomp. You can start with a short, easy walk, which is always welcome on the programme. You don't need to go it alone. You can accompany an experienced leader on a recce, and when you want to do your own walk, you can invite another member to come along with you. Ask any committee member to find someone to buddy up with.

You don't need to create your own route. There are many interesting walks online or in walking books. We also have some walk and route suggestions here: Walk ideas (walks from 2021 - 23) and Walk ideas (walks from 1999 - 2006). The Ramblers website also has suggestions for walks, Find a walking route.

The Ramblers website has more information about Getting started as a walk leader.

The role of a walk leader

If you want to know more about leading walks and the support available from the Ramblers before you commit to the role, you can join one of the  Walk Leadership by Ramblers events. These take place regularly throughout the year and give you an opportunity to hear from an experienced Ramblers volunteer who will talk about a ‘day in the life’ of a walk leader. You will also be able to ask questions to help you decide if it's the right role for you.

The Walk Leader Handbook and the Walk Leader Checklist are perfect places for aspiring and new walk leaders to start. They cover the Ramblers’ 8 Guiding Principles for Leading Group Walks and they take you through what a walk leader needs to consider when planning and leading a group walk.
