Don't lose your way!
DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY - an apt phrase coined by the Ramblers for the project to protect any possible routes that could become rights of way, of which there are some 49,000 in the country. before the deadline of 2026! Devon Area has a few groups with members actively looking into the Devon Lost Ways, and we are being encouraged to get more groups involved. If you are interested in maps, paths, linking up areas without many paths, then this could be for you, see link below to the project on the Ramblers website.
To start with it is just a question of looking at the map for a parish you live in, or know well, to see where the suggested paths are, as many of the possibles will not cut mustard, ie dead ends, through housing estates, or just not worthwhile pursuing. I think you will be surprised at how many have been looked at in all the parishes but of course only a few will be worth registering.
We have a footpath secretaries meeting in September and we will all be reporting back as to how we have got on in each group and it would be really good to say we have a few people from Plymouth Ramblers sifting possible paths, so please let me know if you would like to get involved.
If you need any more information please don’t hesitate to give me a shout.
Many thanks

Hike as you Like
Message from CHSW
May is national walking month and to celebrate we are encouraging people to join in our ‘Hike as you Like’ event to help raise vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
We would really appreciate it if you could share this campaign with your members to join us this May and take on an Incredible Hike to celebrate 30 years of CHSW. You can pick one of 30 incredible hiking routes across Cornwall, Devon, or Somerset or choose one of your own routes!
Whether it’s a scenic stroll or a hike like no other, we’d love you to join the hike and raise some money for local children and families in our care. We have been open throughout the pandemic and have been agile in adapting our care model to, ‘Hospice, Home and Virtual’ to support families in the way they need to be supported at this time.
Its free to register for the event and for each walker who raises over £30, they will receive a very special commemorative 30th Anniversary medal.
To find out more or to sign up please follow this link to our website https://www.chsw.org.uk/event/incredible-hike-hike-you.

May walks
This is the first call for leaders to submit walks for May (or further ahead if you like). The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, and it's a grand time to be out and about. Please use the Book a walk date page to reserve your slot, then when you're ready enter the details in the Walk submission form. If you prefer, you can still go through the Walks co-ordinator, but we hope you will find this online system more convenient!

Family walks
We have re-started a programme of family walks to take place every month or so and geared specifically towards age 4 and above (although younger children and babies in backpacks are welcome). Each walk is between three and five miles and chosen to incorporate climbing, splashing and exploring, with food and drink stops built in! We aim to alternate between Saturday, Sunday and holiday periods and vary both the length and the location in order to facilitate those without cars as well as those wanting to venture further afield. So far, we have planned walks with train rides, ferry crossings, in local spaces and trips out to the moor. Watch this space!

Restarting walks
We've just heard that Ramblers has confirmed with the UK government that organised sport and physical activity, which include Ramblers group walks, can resume from the 29 March, and are exempt from legal gathering limits. There are restrictions in place though, so if you are planning to lead or to join a group walk, please make sure you check our page on Covid precautions.
